Planned Giving

The Friars of Holy Hill appreciate the generosity you have shown us. As a friend of the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, you make it possible for us to continue the mission we started here many years ago, and maintain the Shrine in the way it deserves to be cared for.

We never take your gifts for granted. We put them to work in many different areas:

  • To fund and maintain the Shrine and keep it staffed
  • To provide an opportunity to fund our mission activities including the formation and education of new Friars in Kenya, Africa
  • To support the members of our Discalced Carmelite Community
  • To continue developing and improving Shrine ministries

We have received a number of requests for information about estate planning, and wills in particular. We are happy to supply this information here. Many of our supporters choose to remember Holy Hill in their wills, and this is an important and valuable source of funding for us. These bequests enable us to maintain the Shrine as a place of peace, serenity, healing and prayer for the generations to come.

  • If you have any assets or property at all, you should have a will drawn up to protect those assets after you have died. Without a will, the courts will solely decide who inherits your property and in what manner. This may not reflect your wishes or those of your loved ones. Having a clearly defined will will spare your loved ones from having to navigate legal obstacles during their time of bereavement. You may change a will at any time after you have drafted it.
  • With a will, you can specify how any real property- such as land, home, vehicles, antiques, jewelry, collectibles, and heirlooms- should be distributed. If left to the courts, such property may be considered for nothing more than its monetary value and distributed without regard to appropriateness or sentimental value.
  • Although you cannot dictate how a beneficiary will use his or her inheritance, you can determine the conditions under which they will receive it. You can set up trust funds or annuities for them; this is an especially popular option when leaving a bequest to young children.
  • A will is the only means by which you can leave a portion of your estate to charity or nonprofit organization. You can specify a specific amount you want to be left, a percentage of your estate, or a remainder after all your loved ones have been provided for. You can leave real property, stocks and bonds to charities in addition to cash.

You can leave a gift to Holy Hill with a simple provision in your will. Just name The Discalced Carmelite Friars of Holy Hill, Inc. as one of your beneficiaries. Record the dollar amount, percentage, or the remainder of your estate after your other beneficiaries have been taken care of. You may also bequest real property or stocks and bonds.

Keep in mind that a will is an important document that protects your loved ones and allows your estate to be distributed according to your wishes. Never finalize your plans until you have consulted with your attorney, accountant, and/or financial advisor. You should consult with your heirs and loved ones to ascertain their feelings in the matter. Also you should review your will at least once a year to make sure it is still in accordance with your wishes and needs.

Thank you for your consideration of this information, and God bless you!
