Welcome to the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians, at Holy Hill! On this website, you can learn about the Holy Hill Shrine and the missions and ministries we Discalced Carmelites carry out here.
You will also be able to choose from a wide range of Spiritual Greeting Cards, each one containing a special gift of prayer for the recipient... request blessed spiritual gift items... make a request for prayer by our Holy Hill community... and find a selection of prayers to be said for a variety of occasions.
It is the privilege of the Discalced Carmelites to minister to the many thousands of pilgrims who arrive each year at this beautiful Shrine dedicated to Mary, Help of Christians. We also correspond with our friends and supporters through the mail and online outreach. We want to pray with you and for you, whether or not you are able to visit Holy Hill in person!
A shrine to Our Lady has stood atop Holy Hill since 1863, and the current building was dedicated in 1931. It sits atop the highest peak of the Kettle Moraine, one of the highest points in southern Wisconsin, and can be seen for many miles in every direction.
The Discalced Carmelites assumed stewardship of the Shrine in 1906. In 2006, the centennial of our presence here, the Shrine was declared a Basilica by His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI.
A basilica is a church which is accorded special significance as a place of pilgrimage. Holy Hill is one of the busiest pilgrimage destinations in the United States, receiving tens of thousands of visitors each year from around the world.
The Shrine serves as a “Beacon of Hope,” calling out to all those who are looking for a bit of peace in an increasingly noisy, cluttered and confusing world. Pilgrims may find this peace through quiet, solitary prayer; through participating in Masses, the Sacraments and group prayer; or through following our beautiful outdoor Stations of the Cross.
All funds received by our Development Office are used to support the Shrine and its programs and facilities; to support our provincial ministries, and to assist our mission in the East African nation of Kenya.
All are welcome to visit the Basilica of the National Shrine at any time. Our community is privileged to assist every pilgrim who comes in search of a closer relationship with Jesus through Our Blessed Mother Mary, Help of Christians.
Thank you for your interest, your support, and your prayers!
Father Cyril Guise, O.C.D.
